American Airlines to resume service to Haiti

Additionally, AMR's American Eagle will begin new service into Haiti from Puerto Rico starting March 12.
American Airlines on Tuesday said it would resume service to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Friday, its first flight to the nation since a devastating earthquake last month.

U.S. carriers suspended operations in Haiti following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on January 12.

Delta Air Lines, the world's largest airline, canceled its flight from New York's John F Kennedy International Airport to Port-au-Prince.

A Delta spokesman said on Tuesday in an email that the carrier was working with Haitian authorities to reinstate commercial service as quickly as possible, and hoped to be able to announce a date shortly.

 

 

***1/14/2010 - Following Haiti disaster, AMR Corp. through American Airlines is offering air miles bonus awards and the offer is open for everyone wishing to donate money. On the other hand, commercial flights of U.S. airlines to Haiti are suspended while the aviation authorities have launched the relief operations.

According to the details provided by the AMR Corp. parent of American Airlines offers a unique plan to motivate its clients and frequent travelers to help the poor and needy Haiti people. There’s a 250 bonus miles award for those who spare $50 or above in terms of donation money while the ones donating $100 or more, would be eligible for 500 bonus miles. The donations would be going to the American Red Cross and the same could be made through 28th of February, 2010.

The relief supply flights are also being made to Haiti by American Eagle, the sister concern of American Airlines. As many as 30,000 pounds of supplies comprising of food, water and other stuff were delivered to Haiti via three of the American Eagle flights on Wednesday where they dropped the supplies at Port-au-Prince airport. This would be followed by more flights on Thursday and Friday with three missions each day.

The relief mission flights also carried various medicines and other relevant stuff for the local Haiti hospitals that fortunately remained intact following the massive destruction resulted off historic magnitude 7.3 earthquake. Though Continental Airlines doesn’t have Haiti on its flight’s route, yet they made a generous offer to come forward with help, if need be.

American Airlines and Spirit Airlines have halted flights to the country until further notice, and Delta Air Lines has canceled its only flight to and from the country out of New York's J.F.K. Airport. In a phone interview, a Delta spokesman said communications with the area have been very limited. Earlier reports said the control tower at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince had collapsed in the Tuesday afternoon earthquake, which could also cause hinder efforts to fly in relief supplies.
