SPRING VALLEY — Police shot and killed a man after being called to investigate a disturbance at a downtown restaurant.
The victim, a 37-year-old village resident, was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident began about 3 a.m. when police were called to El Buen Gusto bar and restaurant at 11 Furman Ave.
The victim, who police said was violent, combative and armed with a weapon, allegedly fought with the responding officer, who then fired his weapon.
The officer was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was treated and released.
Meanwhile, a crowd of Haitian-American residents were gathering this morning in a parking lot across from the restaurant to express anger at the shooting of the man, who’s name is reportedly Harvey Giles. Some said Giles was known for having emotional problems but was not dangerous.
District Attorney Thomas Zugibe is investigating.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call 845-356-7400.
